Recent work by Gillian on display at this new florist/plant/maker’s shop alongside etchings by Carla Oxlade.
“The buildings and structures that surround us form the everyday landscapes of our lives. They constitute a visual record of our existence and act as a reminder of our temporality. I am interested in the way we respond to these landscapes and I am curious about whose actions and decisions shape them, how people appraise and value them, seek to protect them or change them.
I construct and paint inspired by the layering I observe and see symmetry in using ‘recycled’ house paint; paint left over from other people’s DIY projects that perhaps retains something of their optimism.
The pieces displayed here are part of an ongoing thread of work exploring shopfronts, that I began in response to high street regeneration schemes, undertaken in Waltham Forest in connection to the 2012 Olympic Games. I recognise the allure of cheerful, choreographed homogeneity, yet prize unplanned iterations of colour, shape and form.”
